Understanding the Bible

Here's a thought from today's One Year Bible reading:

Acts 10:13 “Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”’
This is a rather extreme example, but run with me on this—Without interpreting everything in scripture from a worldview that God is for us and will do us no harm, Peter could have just as easily interpreted this vision to mean he should run downstairs, kill and eat the messengers sent by Cornelius, meaning the Gentiles would have received condemnation instead of salvation.

Sounds crazy until you note how Hitler used scripture to justify slaughtering the Jews and how some sects of Islam use scripture to call for the annihilation of all non-Muslims. All scripture must be understood through the character of Jesus, which creates a worldview of a just, loving God full of grace and mercy who is for us not against us.

What do you think?

Questions or Questioning?

In today's One Year Bible reading, we read the story of Ahab and Jezebel. Here's a couple of things that I found interesting:
1) Notice how God still keeps showing up on Israel's side even though Ahab had done nothing to deserve it. God crushes the enemy for His name's sake, not because Ahab has been so good. That's why Paul encourages us in the New Testament with "If God did not spare His own Son, He won't withhold any good thing." How much more will can we expect our Heavenly Father to crush our enemies? His love and His name assure us that He is on our side!

2) Note how Jezebel accomplished her deeds. She wasn't in anybody's face. She worked behind the scenes with questioning and deceit. "Aren't you the king?" That's not a question, that is questioning--setting up something else instead of looking for an answer. Also, Ahab could have stopped it. We see why a little later when we read of his allowing false worship to please her. A Jezebel (questioning) spirit cannot succeed without an Ahab (man-pleasing) spirit. Even though they both got what they wanted initially, the end result was horrible. Seek to please God, not man. Ask questions looking for answers rather than to serve a personal agenda. We'll like the results a lot more.
